This Speciality and Specialist (SAS) Week (5 to 9 October), our trust is celebrating the contribution our SAS doctors make to the patients they care for.
Across our trust, 81 SAS doctors work in a wide range of services, providing expert care to our patients and help services to run well.

Many SAS doctors also take on roles in teaching, supervision, appraisal and leadership.

We have signed up to the national #SASsix commitments to support and develop SAS doctors.
The #SASsix commitments were developed by the SAS Collective to help improve career development, job satisfaction and retention.
By signing up, we are strengthening our commitment to ensuring SAS doctors have the support and opportunities they need to succeed.
“We’re delighted that TEWV has endorsed the SAS Collective and its #SASsix principles,” said Dr Hany El-Sayeh, consultant psychiatrist and Dr Jatinder Kour, acting consultant psychiatrist and lead SAS tutor.
“This is an important commitment to support SAS doctors, not only in their clinical roles but throughout their career development.
“The six principles focus on key areas including educational supervision, professional development, leadership opportunities and career progression.
“We already have many SAS colleagues across our trust contributing as educators, supervisors, appraisers and leaders alongside their clinical roles. Endorsing the #SASsix builds on this work and makes our commitment clear.
“We value the contribution our doctors make and want TEWV to be a place where they can build rewarding and sustainable careers.”
We have introduced a range of initiatives to support SAS doctors, including educational events, wellbeing activities, improved induction programmes and opportunities for career development.

Earlier this year, our trust was one of the first in England to receive the Silver SAS Excellence in Development Award from NHS England, recognising its work to support and develop the SAS workforce.

The six commitments focus on:
- Access to educational supervision for early-career SAS doctors.
- Fair access to professional development opportunities.
- Opportunities for eligible doctors to progress to specialist roles.
- Supporting experienced SAS doctors to become educators.
- Opening leadership and management opportunities to SAS doctors.
- Supporting eligible locally employed doctors to move onto SAS contracts.
By supporting the #SASsix commitments, our trust is creating an environment where our SAS doctors are recognised, valued and given opportunities to develop, benefiting both colleagues and the people we care for.
