What is hydrotherapy?

How will it help me?

Will I be able to do hydrotherapy?

You may have some health problems that mean you cannot do hydrotherapy. We will talk to you, your carers and your doctor to find out about your health.

If you cannot do hydrotherapy a staff member will talk to you and your carers about other ways to help you.

Your carer will also be checked to make sure they are safe.

Who is at the pool?

You will be assessed in the pool by physiotherapy staff, and carers can be present. Physiotherapy staff will also be on the side of the pool.

Your carer will need to check if they are safe to go into the warm pool.

What do I need to bring?

Swimwear items including a pink swimsuit, blue swim trunks, towel, shampoo, shower gel, and soap, with the word 'swimwear' above.
  • appropriate swimwear
  • towel
  • toiletries and personal care items
  • incontinence swimwear if needed
  • a drink
  • any medication
  • two of your own slings if you need these.

Your carers or family will bring you to the pool and help you get changed.

Do I need to be able to swim?

No, the staff will help you in the water at all times.

How will I get into the water?

You will be helped by the staff. They may need to use specialist equipment.

How long will it last?

Clock with numbers 1 to 12 and the word 'time' above it.

This will be decided between you and your physiotherapist.

When should I not come to the pool?

If you have:

  • sickness / unwell
  • diarrhoea / loose stools that are unusual for you
  • abnormal seizure activity
  • open sores
  • an infection
