Welcome to Ridgeway
Ridgeway is an adult only secure inpatient service, located within Roseberry Park Hospital. We support people with mental illness, learning disabilities and/or Autism.
Patients at Ridgeway are detained under a section of the Mental Health Act 1983, which is the legal framework for treating people with mental illness.

Ridgeway has a variety of both male and female wards, which include:
- low secure mental health wards
- medium secure mental health wards
- Medium secure learning disabilities and/or autism wards
- Low secure learning disabilities and/or autism wards
- An extra care area – a calm, closely supervised space away from the ward, where people can be given extra support and care when they are finding things hard.
At Ridgeway, we are committed to supporting carers and understand the important role they play in the lives of people in our care.
Who is involved in their care
Your loved one is in a safe and supportive environment. They will receive specialised care and treatment from team a team of professionals working with them to provide the best care for their needs. This is called a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and can include:
- Responsible clinician
- Nursing team
- Occupational therapist
- Social worker
- Speech and language therapist
- Activity workers
- Psychologist
- Dietician
- Pharmacist
- Health practitioners
- Peer workers
Care and treatment options
During your loved one’s stay in hospital, we will focus on assessment, treatment and helping them feel more stable. We will work closely with you both to develop a personalised care plan that meets their specific needs. This may involve:
- medication
- therapy
- occupation assessments
- social assessments
- therapeutic interventions and activities
Discharge from hospital
When a person leaves hospital, they will be supported by a team of professionals who are based in the community. As your loved one nears discharge, this team will become more involved in their care. This will help them with the transition out of hospital.
For patients in learning disabilities and Autism service our Secure Outreach and Transitions Team can be contacted on 01642 837444.
For patients in forensic mental health services, the Forensic Community Service Team can be contacted on 01642 837509.
Visiting information
There may be a limit to how many people can visit at one time, depending on the needs of the person in our care and visitors. Staff may be present during visits. All patients are individually assessed for visits by their multidisciplinary team.
Where possible we ask that visits are booked at least 24 hours in advance. We will ask for the names of all visitors.
All child visits will be held in the family visiting room with access to a courtyard. Our social workers will always be involved with any requests for child visits . All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Adult visits are arranged depending on individual need. Please talk to staff on the ward around any arrangements for your visit.
Please come to Ridgeway reception before your arranged visiting time. Visitors can access a locker in the waiting area at Ridgeway reception for personal belongings. You must leave your personal property and any restricted items in these lockers during your visit.
Any items or gifts will be checked by staff. Please contact the ward in advance if you are unsure about items or gifts that can be brought into Ridgeway.
A member of staff will be allocated to greet you take you to meet your loved one.
Parking is available for visitors within the main car park. Please provide your vehicle registration number on arrival, using the screen provided in Ridgeway reception.
Prohibited items
Prohibited items, or contraband, are things you’re not allowed to have, bring or use on our trust grounds. We ask that carers support the wards by not bringing in items such as:
- sharp objects – knives, scissors, etc
- alcohol
- prescribed or illicit substances
- plastic bags
- cigarettes
- lighters
- chewing gum
- mobile phones
There is a comprehensive list in our reception. Please speak to a member of staff if unsure.
Security
To keep everyone safe Ridgeway is monitored by CCTV.

At Ridgeway, we have trained drug detection dogs who regularly visit the site.
Smoking
Our trust has a no smoking policy. Smoking is not permitted within the hospital grounds. Smoking cessation advisors work within the service and can provide support and guidance to your loved ones.

Carer involvement
A carer can be any individual that patients feel is a significant and meaningful person in their lives.
Carers play a major role in the lives of the people in our care. They offer invaluable support and often worry what would happen to the individual they care for if they were unable to provide such support.
