Traumatic experiences can leave us with intrusive memories that feel bad and are hard to get out of our minds. No matter how hard we try, we cannot forget, and we can get stuck with the upset.
FlashLite is an intervention currently being used in Crisis Teams in the Trust and can help us with our mental health. It helps to reduce how upset we are when the memory comes back into our minds.
A good thing about the FlashLite intervention is that it works without thinking or talking about the memory. This can make it easier for people to feel better and have less distress due to things that have happened to them.
When is the FlashLite intervention used?
When we are distressed by a memory, the thoughts and feelings we are experiencing become overwhelming and it can stop us from being able to get on with normal everyday life.
As it works quickly, this is a brief intervention to help you feel less distressed.
What happens during the treatment?
As part of your work with the Crisis Team, we will discuss the FlashLite intervention with you if we think that the intervention may help you.
The FlashLite intervention is a brief intervention and can lead to a reduction in your distress without having to talk or think about what has happened to you.
Before using the FlashLite Intervention, we will ask you to choose a memory that is causing you the most immediate distress.
Then we will talk about a good memory or chat about something different, like where do you like to go on holiday?
As we chat, we’ll ask you to blink a few times. Then we’ll ask you if there is any change you can notice in the upsetting memory.
We might do this three or four times during the intervention.
At the end of the intervention, we will ask you to tell us if the feelings have reduced or if anything feels different when you think of the memory.
We want to make sure the intervention has been helpful, so we will ask you about this again at your next appointment.
