What is peer support?
Peer support means to be supported by someone with lived experience similar to that of yourself.
In our Trust we have a number of peer support mentors who choose to share their own experiences to support others towards improving their wellbeing.
They understand how you may be feeling and have been through similar things to you so they can listen and support you on your road to recovery.
Peer support provides something very unique, as opposed to other treatments or therapy, and that is a real sense of self and control.
What peer support mentors can and can’t do
Our peer support mentors can:
- Provide emotional support
- Connect you with services and support groups
- Help you to identify your goals and hopes related to wellbeing
Our peer support mentors can’t provide:
- Counselling
- Care work
- Life coaching
Benefits of peer support
As our peer support mentors have been through a similar experience to you they are able to show you that there is hope and that recovery can take place.
As a result you may also see a number of other benefits including:
- Improved confidence and self-esteem
- More positive outlook on life
- Making positive connections with others
- Improved mental wellbeing
As a service user you could benefit from a peer mentor as we can relate to your experiences, emotions and support and help you to engage.
