Mallard ward is an 11 bed, low secure ward for men, situated within Ridgeway at Roseberry Park. The people in our care on the ward are generally over 55 years of age, vulnerable and/or severely physically impaired, with a history of being a significant risk to themselves or others.
Philosophy of care
Our purpose-built unit offers a safe environment that incorporates physical adaptations to support activities of daily living. We offer support and reassurance to patients that experience different levels of physical infirmity.
We aim to improve quality of life by promoting choice, dignity, independence and the right to individuality within a least restrictive environment.
Daily routine
Mallard ward has a seven-day activity programme. Our activity lead arranges and plans additional ward-based activities for the day. Ward activities are planned to help develop, maintain and enhance the skills of the patients on our ward.
We have a motivational meeting each evening and staff will let you know of any important information and discuss if you can plan any leave for the following day.
Leave further afield can be arranged in advance, once agreed by the multidisciplinary team (MDT).
Ward environment
Mallard ward has a homely environment that operates within the safety requirements of a low secure service. All rooms are en-suite and specialist equipment can be provided for individuals with mobility issues.
With the people in our care in mind, furniture, corridors and bedroom signage have been chosen as dementia-friendly colours. The décor offers the opportunity for reminiscence and cognitive stimulation and clients are encouraged to become involved in decorating the environment for special occasions.
Mallard ward has a dedicated cinema and sensory room, and patients have open access to a courtyard area with plants and decorative seating areas. There are laundry facilities located on the ward and patients can cook their own meals in the adult learning disability kitchen if they would like too.
Meals and drinks
We provide three meals per day, always with a variety of choice. The weekly menus are on display in the dining room and alternate each week. You are also able to have your own snacks.
If you have any special dietary requirements (such as diabetic, vegetarian or cultural) we will inform the catering service.
The ward operates protected mealtimes, to make sure you have your meal with limited disruption. We therefore ask that professionals and carers avoid contacting the ward at mealtimes where possible.
