What is research?
Research is the development of new knowledge and ideas. It helps improve our understanding of mental health problems and find better treatments.
It helps us know more about which treatments work and which don’t
It helps us to understand people’s views and experiences.
It helps change the way health professionals work
Everyone can get involved – patients, carers, families, staff
Patients’ lived experience of research
The research interviewer made us feel very comfortable throughout the process
Anonymous, Patient Research Experience Survey
People should know that they can drop out of a study at any time. I would encourage everyone to consider taking part in research. A clinical trial might benefit you and if it doesn’t it could benefit someone else. If you get involved in wider research, like me, it keeps the brain going.

Examples of research activities
Observation – understanding what people do and how people interact
Questionnaires and surveys – Answering questions, on a paper form or an online survey
Interviews – a researcher would ask you questions about your experiences
Focus groups – A supported group of people are asked questions about their experience
Clinical Trials – new treatments or devices are tested under controlled conditions to see if they are helpful
What will happen if I take part?
You would first be given an information sheet which will explain what the study involves.
If you like you can ask questions and discuss this information with a member of the research team
You would be asked to sign a consent form, in a clinic or in your own home
Important things to know
Taking part in research is entirely voluntary. You can stop taking part in research at any time, without reason
This will not affect the care you receive
Your personal data is kept confidential
However, if there is risk or harm to yourself or others, certain information would have to be shared with specific people.
This would be discussed with you before anyone else is informed
