I would like to convey my true appreciation for choosing me for this award. I am really thankful to my nominator and panel members for this recognition.
Girish Rao, older people's consultant liaison psychiatrist.
Girish was recently presented with the Hospital Supervisor of the Year Award by Health Education England’s Durham and Tees Valley Training Programme.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to have Dr Rao as my supervisor” said Joshua Lim, an integrated training post (ITP) trainee, who nominated him for the award.
“When I began my training in the liaison psychiatry team in Darlington, I was nervous and had no prior experience of working in the NHS or the UK, but with Dr Rao’s down-to-earth nature and kindness, I was immediately put at ease.
“He warmly welcomed me to the team and supported me throughout my training.
“Dr Rao went above and beyond his role as a supervisor, sharing his vast knowledge and experience in psychiatry, as well as supporting me in applying what I had learned into my future as a general practitioner (GP). He encouraged me to ask questions, even on unrelated topics and provided guidance in various aspects of life.
“This recognition is a testament to his exceptional skills and genuine care for his trainees and colleagues alike. Thank you, Dr Rao, for being an amazing supervisor and enriching the lives of those around you.”
The regional education programme provides training for the current and future generations of GPs, supporting the educators and the wider GP community across the North East and Cumbria.
Rachel Lunney, GP training programme director (TPD) and host of the event at the Darlington Arena, said: “The awards were infused with the perspectives and achievements of international medical graduates.
“Girish and the other excellent supervisors understand the experiences that the international graduates have.
“Thank you so much for all you do and especially what you have done for Josh. All the best to both of you.”
