A local NHS worker is embarking on a mission to create a space of joy and inclusivity for her daughter and others like her.
Sue’s daughter Christine, 26, who has a learning disability, autism, epilepsy, hearing loss, communication difficulties, and ataxia, found solace and support in a supported residential setting at a farm in Stokesley.
The farm offered promising plans for the residents, including a day centre with amenities like a barber shop, hairdresser, nail bar, and a serene sensory room. However, unfortunately the project came to a halt.
Determined to make a difference, Sue has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise £100,000 for an adapted playground and exercise area at the farm.
Recognising the challenges adults with disabilities face in traditional gym settings, Sue envisions this space as not only benefiting the residents but also the broader local community.
“I don’t expect to raise the money overnight, but every pound brings us closer to our goal of creating a space where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive and enjoy the benefits of physical activity.” She said.
Sue who currently resides in Harrogate is a dedicated member of the Harrogate and District Learning Disability Team at Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV), and along with her daughter, will take part in the TEWV 10k challenge in York on Sunday 21 April.
This is the first running event organised by the mental health, learning disability and autism NHS Trust.
Though her daughter’s disabilities prevent her from running, Sue will proudly push her in her wheelchair, symbolizing their shared determination to overcome obstacles and make a difference.
Despite facing setbacks in securing support from high-profile entities, Sue remains undeterred in her mission. She continued: “Even if you can spare £1, it would be appreciated to get this project off the ground.”
