As the holidays come to a close, for some young people, the thought of going back to school can make them feel anxious and nervous.
Faye North, a senior psychological wellbeing practitioner at the Trust, has shared some top tips on what you can do if you or someone you know is feeling worried.
- Talk about school and ask questions in your ordinary everyday conversations as the holidays come to an end. Chances are, someone you know is feeling the same way. Talking to your friends or family about how you feel can help you to feel better.
- Get back into a routine and make sure you have a good night’s sleep. It might be difficult to set an alarm after a few weeks off, but it will help prepare you ahead of going back.
- Try some simple breathing techniques if you feel yourself becoming overwhelmed. Take a long, slow breath in through your nose, hold your breath for 1,2,3… breathe out slowly through your mouth. Do this three times to help reduce your heart rate to begin to feel calmer.
Young people aged 11-18 can also now access free online wellbeing support from www.Kooth.com. It provides a safe and non-judgemental place to talk, connect and chat with others.
