You are reading this because you are supporting someone who is accessing Tees Esk Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust.
Caring for someone who is struggling with their mental health can be difficult. This is why we want to share some information, ways of contacting us, and additional sources of support that might help you.
Useful contacts for people involved in the Health and Justice System
If you are concerned about a friend or family member’s mental health in prison, contact the Safer Custody team. They will pass your concerns onto the Mental Health Team.
Find the contact details for Safer Custody at:
https://www.prisonersfamilies.org/pages/category/need-urgent-help?&Take=24.
Or call the prison number and ask for Safer Custody
What is the Mental Health Treatment Requirement?
The Mental Health Treatment Requirement involves up to 12 one-to-one sessions with a mental health practitioner. These sessions aim to help a person explore their current difficulties (such as low mood, anxiety), think about ways to cope better, and learn skills to improve day-to-day wellbeing.
MHTR sessions are most effective if someone attends consistently as it can take time to feel comfortable and start making the most of sessions.
MHTR sessions may make someone think and see some things differently. After a session, they may need some time to adjust, or they may want to talk about what has come up. This is often when you, the career/trusted person, can play an important role.
Contact with us
We know that you, as a carer or trusted person in someone’s life, are also supporting the person we work with. After our sessions the person returns to their regular life away from support services.
Although we will not share personal details from our sessions with you unless the person agrees, there may be times when it is helpful for everyone involved if we all know about each other and have a means of contacting each other.
We would be happy to arrange contact with you. This could allow us to:
- Introduce ourselves
- Answer any questions you may have
- Talk about why you might want to contact us and why we might want to contact you
- Agree the best way of keeping in touch
