Information for parents and carers about non-medical prescribers.
Non-medical prescribers are nurses or pharmacists employed by the Trust who can write prescriptions for your child.
Non-medical prescribers have received specialist training and are qualified to prescribe medication for your child suitable for their condition. All non-medical prescribers receive regular supervision and training for their role in line with legal requirements.
The aim of non-medical prescribing is to improve patient care through quicker access to treatment when it is needed. There is evidence to suggest that non-medical prescribing can:
- provide a more holistic and multi-disciplinary service
- improve patient choice
- provide consistency for the child and their family
- reduce costs to the health service
- reduce time to treatment.
There may be some medicines or situations where a non-medical prescribers will refer to a doctor for advice or to prescribe the medicine.
