The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has today (Friday 23 August) notified us that the inpatient wards at West Lane Hospital in Middlesbrough will close. Evergreen Centre, Newberry Centre and Westwood Centre will close. Other services on the site will remain open.
Colin Martin, Chief Executive at Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We understand that this is extremely difficult for the young people at West Lane Hospital and their families. They deserve to be cared for in a safe, high quality environment and we are sorry that the care we provided did not meet the standards we would expect.
“Our immediate focus is minimising the impact that the closure may have on our patients and their families. We are committed to working closely with patients, families, staff and NHS England to work through timescales and to make sure we to provide a smooth and safe transition for patients to alternative services.”
Over the last few weeks we have worked closely with the young people at West Lane Hospital, their families and carers and our partners, including NHS England, to identify arrangements for the safe and timely discharge or transfer of the young people.
All young people have now safely moved and the inpatient wards – Evergreen Centre, Newberry Centre and Westwood Centre – at West Lane Hospital have closed.
Other services on the site remain open.
