What are the programme details?
The mental health services for older people physiotherapy team provides and delivers a structured physical exercise programme to help an individual achieve a measurable positive impact on both on physical and mental health.
The pre assessment process will allow you to meet the physiotherapy team, familiarise yourself with the exercise equipment (see below for exercise equipment/options) and complete baseline measurements of your current fitness and mental health using the Functional Fitness MOT and Measure Yourself Medical Outcome Profile (MYMOP) assessments.
Health promotion will be delivered as part of the programme and is supported with various handouts and leaflets on topics such as healthy eating, smoking cessation and the importance of sleep for example.
Why should I consider the programme?
Being active is great for your physical health and fitness, and evidence shows that it can also improve your mental wellbeing.
We think that the mind and body are separate. But what you do with your body can have a powerful effect on your mental wellbeing.
Evidence shows that there is a link between being physically active and good mental wellbeing and it is now thought that physical activity helps maintain and improve wellbeing in a number of ways.
Physical activity can help people with depression and anxiety with evidence showing that physical activity can cause chemical changes in the brain, which can help to positively change our mood.
Being active can improve wellbeing because it brings about a sense of greater self-esteem, self-control and the ability to rise to a challenge. (NHS Choices, 2017).
What happens after the programme finishes?
Before the programme finishes, we will establish and subsequently discuss potential options for ongoing and future activities for health, exercise and fitness so any improvements achieved during the group/1:1 sessions will be maintained going forward. This may include information about joining/accessing community activities, (e.g. walking group), clubs or local gyms according to your individual likes and preferences.
At the end of the programme you will be invited to provide any feedback so that we can strive to always improve the experience for others.

What will it cost?
Nothing. No payment is required and participation will be part of ongoing treatment interventions provided by MHSOP.
What will I need to wear?
Light, breathable clothing appropriate for physical activity with supportive and comfortable footwear essential.
How many people in a group?
No less than two and no more than six people will be taking part at any one time.
Why a programme for 12 weeks?
Evidence suggested that a 12 week period is required to begin to show positive, noticeable benefits (N.B if exercising for an appropriate duration and intensity).
What equipment would I be able to use?
Various pieces of aerobic exercise equipment are available including a treadmill, rowing machines and bikes. Resistance exercise equipment is also available for use.
Do I need anything else to take part?
Some people like to bring their own soft drink of choice but water will be available. It is extremely important for people taking part to maintain an adequate intake of fluid when exercising.
What happens if I do not like it and do not wish to continue?
A 12 week commitment is necessary to gain the greatest benefits from the programme, however you not obligated to complete the programme if you do not think it is for you.
1:1 – The programme carried out parallel too, but not part of a group session. This is dependent on individual preferences.
Aerobic – relating to or denoting exercise taken to improve the efficiency of the body’s cardiovascular system in absorbing and transporting oxygen.
Functional fitness MOT – A booklet produced by Glasgow and Caledonian University, used to record goals, develop an action plan and chart progression of a person’s participation within the programme.
MDT – Multi Disciplinary Team (e.g. community nurses, support workers, doctors, occupational and physiotherapists)
MYMOP – Measure Yourself Medical Outcome Profile, is a patient-generated, or individualised, outcome questionnaire. It is problem-specific but includes general wellbeing. It is applicable to all patients who present with symptoms, and these can be physical, emotional or social
Resistance exercise – a form of training performed to increase the body’s strength, power, and muscular endurance.
