Langley ward is a five-bed ward forensic rehabilitation ward for men who are 18 years and over, have a diagnosis of learning disabilities and who have come into contact with the criminal justice system.
You may have been referred to Langley ward from our secure inpatient service or a secure hospital outside of the Trust.
As part of the referral process registered nurse will assess your referral to make sure the service is right for you and they will then make arrangements to visit you and your care team in the place you are living to gather more information.
Once all the information is gathered a decision will be made as to whether Langley ward is a suitable location for you. If so the referring team will be notified and an appointment would be made to visit you to discuss the decision and to understand your thoughts, feelings and wishes.
If beds are available on the ward you will be invited to visit before the admission takes place. If beds are not available your name will be placed on a waiting list.
Philosophy of care
The rehabilitation service offers a range of evidence-based recovery and rehabilitation interventions to people with learning disabilities and/or autism and associated offending history. These are designed to create opportunities for you to continue your journey back into your community.
We aim to create an environment which enables you to practice your skills and increase your confidence in the least restrictive way possible. We will carry out regular risk assessments to support your move into independent living.
We understand that different people have had different life experiences and if you have experienced a traumatic event this can further impact your mental health. We will provide a compassionate response, acknowledging how trauma might have contributed to your condition and support you to work through this.
Daily routine
Langley is a self-catering ward and we have a weekly rota where patients take turns, with staff support to cook, wash up, and set and clean the tables. We also have a seven-day personalised activity programme which patients devise with support from the occupational therapist / occupational therapy assistant. Ward activities are aim to develop and maintain your skills and to provide you with recreation opportunities.
Meals and drinks
Langley ward does not have protected meal times but does discourage any form of visiting during mealtimes in order to give you the time to enjoy your meals.
- Breakfast: As required, before 9.15am
- Lunch: noon
- Evening meal: 5pm
These times can be flexible to suit ward activities.
Activities
There is an activity room on Langley ward.
When staying on the ward you are encouraged to get involved in ward-based activities including numeracy and literacy, cooking, crafts, discussion groups, patients’ meetings, and various health promotion sessions.
There is a patient computer with internet access on the ward; access may be restricted depending on an individual’s risks.
Patients are encouraged to attend day placements within the community which promote occupational activities.
Multi-disciplinary team (MDT)
On admission to Langley ward, you will be appointed a named nurse and keyworkers who are responsible for your care, and an allocated member of staff as a point of contact during their shift.
You will be cared for by a team of professionals made up of people best placed to help your individual care needs. This team is collectively called a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and includes a responsible clinician, nursing team, a psychologist, an occupational therapist and occupational therapist assistant, social workers, dietitians, speech and language therapists and pharmacists.
The MDT will have regular meetings with you to discuss decisions about treatment, goals for your care, and discuss any concerns you may have.
We also have a ward manager, a ward clerk and housekeepers, and nursing students who come to work as part of our team.
Treatment
Treatments available on the ward include medication, one to one sessions or group work provided by the psychology department, secure outreach transition team, speech and language therapy, or your named nurse.
Psychology
The ward has access to an allocated psychologist who will assess what treatment people may need whilst they are staying with us. Within our forensic services, we offer a number of psychological treatments and these may be delivered as group sessions and/or 1:1 sessions as appropriate.
Recovery care planning
We adopt a recovery focused approach to care planning on the ward. This ensures that the patient is placed at the heart of everything, and that they are fully involved in planning their care and treatment. Patients and staff work together to plan the steps that need to be taken to help them on their recovery journey and progress towards discharge.
Patient involvement
Every month a patient experience meeting is held. A service user representative from Langley ward meets with health care professionals to discuss the service they receive or their experience from other hospitals. The aim of the meeting is to improve the care and service provided within our forensic inpatient services.
Carer/family involvement
We like to involve and support carers and families (where possible) in relation to your loved ones care. If you would like to hear from us, we would be grateful if you could check we have your contact details. Once we have this information, we will do our best to involve you in as much as we can.
Trust chaplain
Within the hospital there is a team of chaplains / faith leaders who aim to provide for the religious, spiritual and pastoral needs of service users, carers and staff.
There is a multi-faith room at Lanchester Road Hospital offering a variety of facilities, including prayer mats.
Facilities
Each of the five bedrooms on Langley ward have an en-suite bathroom.
The ward has an activity room, communal lounge, visitors’ room, self-catering kitchen, and dining room, laundry room and a clinic where medication and examination can be carried out in a private area.
There are also two offices where patient information can be discussed confidentially.
Ward visits
Visitors are welcome but are encouraged to telephone the ward to arrange a convenient time to visit.
Child visits
No visitors under the age of 18 will be allowed access to the ward. If you have children that would like to visit you while on the ward (this is anybody under the age of 18) you must discuss this with your care team at the earliest opportunity. To ensure visits are in the best interests of the child there is a child visiting policy that must be followed; this includes requesting permission from the person who has parental responsibility for the child, consideration of the child’s wishes and also in most cases liaison with local social services. If granted, visits will take place in an alternative area and visits must be booked in plenty of time to make sure the visiting space is available. All children visiting must be a relation to you.
Smoking
Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust have a no smoking policy. Smoking cessation advisors work within the service and will be able to provide support and guidance relation to Nicotine Replacement Therapy if you need to access this during your stay. Smoking is not permitted within the hospital grounds. Further information about our policy is available on request. Patients on Langley ward can use E-cigarettes / Vapes in the garden on Langley ward and the hospital grounds.
