About the specialist eating disorders service
We are a specialist eating disorder service for young people up to the age of 18 who have difficulties with eating and weight.
This service provides specialised multi-disciplinary assessment, treatment and evaluation for young people and their families and the team includes:
- Mental health nurses
- Mental health practitioners
Specialist eating disorders assessment appointments
You will initially be offered a set of assessment appointments. Where possible we usually try to offer all of the assessments within one appointment so that we can provide a treatment plan before you leave:
- Family and dietetic
Two members of staff, including a dietitian will meet with you and your parents or carers. We will talk about the current difficulties and gather some background information.
The dietitian will carry out an assessment to look at dietary intake and discuss food related issues in detail.
This is an appointment for you (the young person) on your own, giving you the opportunity to talk alone. You might be asked to complete questionnaires about your eating or aspects of your life.
- Physical monitoring
Your blood pressure, pulse and temperature will be taken alongside any other assessment. Bloods will either be taken within this appointment or at your GP service.
- Psychiatric and/ or paediatric
An appointment to meet with a psychiatrist within our service or a local paediatrician may be required for specific difficulties.
This is a session where we bring together everything that has been talked about and what this means. We will tell you if we can help, what happens next and answer any questions that you or family may have.
When you attend appointments, anything you or your family tell us is confidential. There are times when we are required to share information, for example if we are made aware of anyone being at risk of harm. If we are required to pass this information on we will discuss this with you.
If there are is any part of this leaflet you do not understand or wish to discuss further please contact us.
