What is a children’s psychological wellbeing practitioner?
A children’s psychological wellbeing practitioner (PWP) works within child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) to increase access to a low level form of psychological therapy, which, based on research, is effective for treating children and young people with low mood and anxiety.
PWPs are trained to identify common mental health disorders and to agree a shared treatment plan with a patient that is both personalised and evidence-based.
Our primary purpose is to help children and young people to feel empowered and have tools for life.
What we do
We explore thinking, feeling and actions with those who are experiencing mild to moderate mental health problems. These could include common problems facing young people such as low mood, anxiety and conduct disorders.
We also work collaboratively with young people in order to provide understanding, skills and support. Think of us as a ‘personal trainer’ who provides skills and education that can be applied outside the therapy room, relating to everyday problems.
The services we offer
We offer a number of specialist therapies to support young people. These include:
- Behavioural Activation (BA)
- Exposure Therapy
- Behavioural experiments
- Parent-led CBT for childhood anxiety
- Psychoeducation which may include: Self-help information and resources, sleep hygiene tips
We also provide:
- Information about other services which may be beneficial to the child and young person and their families
- Group sessions on a number of different topics such as exam stress, anxiety and management of low mood
How we work
Our sessions can be delivered in a variety of ways including face to face and phone.
