The Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) is the professional body for psychiatrists in the UK and its annual awards celebrate the very best in clinical practice at all levels of the field.
This year we have colleagues shortlisted in two award categories.
Dr Mani Santhana Krishnan (Krish), consultant in old age psychiatry/liaison psychiatry and specialty clinical director for mental health services for older people is one of the nominees for the Psychiatrist of the Year category.

Dr Krish led the pilot project for a portable ECG device that helped protect mental health patients during the pandemic and played a key role in changing national guidance around ECGs.
A trailblazer in Delirium education and prevention, Dr Krish actively promotes Delirium, highlighting the serious and lasting effects on patients. Raising awareness on social media, he started the hashtag #icanpreventDelirium and you can often see him out and about with a giant inflatable brain.
Dr Krish said: “I’m delighted to have been shortlisted for the RCPsych Psychiatrist of the Year Award again this year (I was shortlisted in 2021).
“The awards are judged by those at the very top of our profession, so to be one of just three people shortlisted is a real honour.
“It is a validation to my core values of providing high quality patient centred care to my patients, support and supervision to my trainees as educator and always striving for excellence and parity of esteem for mental health in my role as clinical leader.”
Dr Jennifer Gilligan, a specialty doctor with the York and Scarborough perinatal mental health team has also been nominated in the Specialty Doctor / Associate Specialist of the Year category.

Dr Gilligan was nominated for her work in improving the recognition of specialty, associate specialist and specialist (SAS) careers and supporting opportunities for SAS career progression both within our Trust and nationally.
“I am really honoured to have been nominated and shortlisted for this award,” said Dr Gilligan, “I am proud to be a SAS doctor and strongly believe that choosing a SAS career should not limit the opportunities for progression and development.
“It is wonderful to have this recognition of the work I have done, particularly when I know there are so many other SAS doctors in TEWV and across the country who are doing amazing work every day.”
The full list of shortlisted nominees can be found on the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ website.
The winners will be announced on Thursday 7 November, good luck to both of you!
