Our occupational therapists have been developing their skills as trainers, coaches and champions of Positive Approach® to Care (PAC) for care partners of people living with dementia.
Positive Approach® to Care engages with the person in activities that matter, rather than doing something ‘to’ them, or ‘for’ them.
In 2015, two of our occupational therapists were the first NHS staff in the UK to train with USA based occupational therapist and dementia education specialist, Teepa Snow.
We now have more than 12 occupational therapists as certified PAC trainers, seven certified coaches and over 40 PAC champions, including nurses and a social worker.
We facilitate care partners to use a Positive Physical Approach™ and Hand-under-Hand® (HuH) techniques, enabling the person living with dementia to feel in control of their personal care and leisure activities.
We are helping care partners both in the community and in care homes to have a better understanding of the brain changes that occur with the advancement of dementia. Using Teepa Snow’s GEMS® States of Dementia model, we focus on what skills a person still has, rather than what they have lost.
Our occupational therapists have trained over 3000 people including NHS staff, social prescribers, care home managers and their care assistants, home care agencies and family carers who are supporting someone at home with dementia.
Thank you to all our amazing occupational therapists.
