People receiving treatment for their mental health have taken to the waves for the adventure of a lifetime to help raise awareness and promote recovery for those experiencing early psychosis.
Nine patients who use the services of Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) joined colleagues from the York early intervention in psychosis (EIP) team and a professional crew on their ‘voyage to recovery’ journey.
The team set sail from Hartlepool Marina on Saturday 6 August and will make their way up the North East coast to Scotland, before returning to the port later this week.
The voyage is part of a unique approach to working with young people and adults who have experienced psychosis – by offering them the chance to take part in an adventure therapy programme.
TEWV psychological therapist Martin Hopkins said: “Psychosis is an isolating illness and there is unfortunately a lot of stigma attached to it. If a person experiences psychosis it can be scary and confusing, and often people can withdraw from day-to-day life.
The aim of this exciting sailing voyage is to integrate challenging, learning activities as part of a structured therapeutic environment. It’s a great way to get people out of their comfort zones.
Adventure therapy has been proven to be effective in supporting people in their recovery journey, by offering opportunities for growth and self-development through taking part in challenging outdoor activities.
Sailing adventure therapy also provides people with a regular routine – offering a shared sense of purpose with strong and safe leadership peer support and the chance to spend time offline, away from modern technology and influences.
“Our patients have been really excited for this adventure of a lifetime and we all have too. In the spirit of co-creation we are working with them to deliver the care that they need in an engaging and innovative way,” added Martin.
“They will learn how to sail and navigate, working towards recognised sailing qualifications and will also be able to brush up on core skills, such as cooking, cleaning and working as part of a team.”
I’m excited to meet new people and work as a team out at sea. There’s a mix of activities I’m happy to help with, like sailing, cooking and cleaning on the boat – I have always wanted to go on a boat trip.

Adventures help you to escape and focus your mind, I can’t wait to take in the surroundings on the water and work together as a team to overcome challenges. It’s a completely unique experience and I hope it helps me within my recovery journey.
