The Cumbria and North East Transforming Care Partnership strategic PBS team, (part of Department of Health and Social Care’s national Transforming Care programme), aims to improve the lives of children, young people and adults with a learning disability and/or autism who display behaviours that challenge, including those with a mental health condition.
The team works to educate health and social care workers, education professionals and families and carers about Positive Behavioural Support (PBS), an evidence-based approach which is recognised as best practice in supporting people with learning disability and behaviours that challenge.
Through assessing the wider social, physical and individual contexts in which such behaviour occurs, PBS aims to help to understand behaviour in order to be able to develop support.
The overall goal is to improve a person’s quality of life and the lives of people around them and minimise the chances of behaviour that challenges happening in the first place.
The team has worked with a number of partners from across the health and care sector and with Northumbria University to develop and deliver a range of accredited learning programmes in Positive Behavioural Support for health and social care and education professionals in North East and North Cumbria.
In addition to the learning programmes they have also developed a new regional PBS website that brings together work from across the North East and Cumbria, providing access to dynamic, innovative content.
The website includes:
- Information to support families around PBS with useful information and resources
- Information to support health, social and education care around PBS with useful information, resources and best practice.
- Information around upcoming events, courses and latest news and resources published.
- A PBS Coalition section for those who have completed the university programmes to enable and manage sharing of resources and best practice.
- Information around upcoming events, courses and latest news and resources published.
Judith Thompson, North East and Cumbria Learning Disability Network Manager said “We are incredibly pleased to launch this fully refreshed PBS website that brings all our information, knowledge and expertise about PBS into one place and available for all. This website is a major milestone as part of the Learning Disability/Autism Workforce Transformation programme to make sure all partners have access to up to date, pragmatic and supportive information.”
Shona Chambers parent carer and PBS trainer adds: “We have been listening and working with families to develop and deliver a co-produced PBS families workshop model that is appropriate, accessible and is supportive of families. This website is a great opportunity to share information and for families to access support and built upon what is being delivered through the PBS families workshops
