About the service
Springwood is a complex needs unit with 14 beds.
Springwood provides care for people usually over the age of 65 who need specialist mental health nursing care, but on occasions also people who are younger.
People who have a need for the unit’s specialist care will spend some time with the team but they will always seek to discharge to the most appropriate environment when the time is right.
The Springwood team
The unit is led by a ward manager and two clinical lead nurses and is staffed by registered nurses and non registered nursing staff.
The staff are on duty 24 hours a day and there is always a registered nurse in charge of each shift.
The staff are divided into two teams and each patient will be allocated to one of these teams.
The medical care is provided by a consultant psychiatrist and an associate specialist, who is on the ward at different times throughout the week.
How to access the service
Referrals to this service will almost always be for people who have received a period of care at one of our older people’s assessment and treatment wards in North Yorkshire. It will have been agreed by the care team and the person’s family and/or carer that further specialist care is required before discharge can be safely and effectively achieved.
Occasionally an individual may be admitted from a nursing or residential environment, with admission to Springwood featuring as part of the discharge plan, if there are concerns that the placement may not be successful.
