Veterans services

We know that the experiences people have during military service and the move to civilian life afterwards can sometimes trigger mental health illness.

To promote the recovery and wellbeing of those affected by military service our trust provides specialist services for veterans.

Community Veterans Mental Health Service

This community based service aims to make it easier for veterans with concerns about their mental health to seek and access help. The service allows veterans to receive the care and support they need close to home and family.

Veterans Wellbeing Group

This group is set out like a course where it provides an introduction to various mental health topics such as depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The group aims to help protect and improve the mental health of a veteran as well as aid transition to civilian life. It's based in Darlington however it's open to all veterans across County Durham, Teesside and North Yorkshire.

Veterans' Wellbeing Assessment and Liaison Service (VWALS)

Working in partnership with Combat Stress and the Royal British Legion, the Veterans Wellbeing Assessment and Liaison Service (VWALS) service aims to provide a prompt, effective assessment, liaison and signposting service for military veterans, their families and partners across the region.

VWALS provides three outreach and assessment workers and uses existing community, primary and secondary care and third sector (eg private and charity organisations) mental health services across the North East.

Veterans mental health awareness training

In light of the Murrison report and the announcement to make the military covenant law, the NHS and statutory sector has to be equipped to work with military veterans. This training a chance to gain essential knowledge about working with military veterans.

The workshop is for NHS and local authority staff and third sector alcohol and substance misuse teams working in the County Durham or Darlington area, who are occasionally or potentially involved with, or who have an interest in working with military veterans as part of their normal duties within their clinical or social care teams.
