Major building work required to Middlesbrough mental health hospitalMajor building work is being planned for a mental health hospital on Teesside.
The Trust has today announced that significant work is required to fix a number of construction defects at Roseberry Park in Middlesbrough, including problems with the hospital’s fire safety system.
Brent Kilmurray, chief operating officer at the Trust, said: “Three Valleys Healthcare Ltd, the PFI contractors who have responsibility for the hospital, identified the fire safety issues last June. Working with Cleveland Fire Brigade, we took immediate action to mitigate the risks and to address the safety of service users, staff and visitors whilst they’re in Roseberry Park. However, these are not long term solutions.
“Since then we’ve been working with Three Valleys Healthcare, fire safety and other construction experts to try to establish what is needed to resolve the problems and the most effective way of doing so.
“The safety of our patients, staff and visitors is our greatest concern. We also want to make sure all works are completed as efficiently as possible with the least disruption to service users, their families and staff.
“We’ve reviewed a number of options and have a plan for decanting the hospital on a staged basis so that the necessary works can be carried out.
“Unfortunately we are unable to do this without moving some of our services temporarily but we will do everything we can to minimise the impact on service users, their families and staff.
“This is important work that will need careful planning and we’ll share more detailed information about what to expect and what support we’ll provide with those affected.”
Plans are now being finalised and the Trust hopes that the work will get underway by January 2018.
