Are you are a graduate looking for an exciting and rewarding role or do you have a degree and are thinking about changing career? Why not consider the two-year Think Ahead fast-track programme, which offers a new route into mental health social work.

The Think Ahead programme is open to anyone who has graduated with any degree (2:1 or above) and you don’t need any prior experience of working in health care. In your first year, as you train, you’ll receive a £17,000 tax-free bursary, as well as developing essential leadership skills and gaining a Diploma in social work. You will also have a secure job in year two while you work towards your master’s degree in social work and develop leadership skills.

The programme aims to encourage a society where everyone with mental health illnesses can flourish, by attracting talented people into mental health services, and spreading social approaches to mental health across society.

Did you know 1 in 4 adults in England have a mental health illness, 1 in 3 families include someone with a mental health problem and on average people with a mental health illness die on average 20 years earlier. These are staggering statistics.

Mental health social workers empower individuals with mental illness, and their families, carers, and communities, to lead fulfilling, independent lives. Building resilience in individuals, their networks, and their communities transforms people’s wellbeing, and as a result, improves our society and economy.

As the local NHS mental health provider for Teesside, County Durham and most of North Yorkshire we welcome this approach and we have joined the programme as a partner to train and employ Think Ahead participants and we will have Think Ahead participants training with us this year.

As a trainee mental health social worker you would work alongside other mental health professionals as part of a multi-disciplinary team to arrange support and care, provide guidance and therapy and ensure people’s safety. During your training you might work in any one of a number of specialist mental health settings, including child and adolescent mental health services, adults, mental health services for older people, learning disabilities or forensic mental health services.

The skills you develop will not only help drive forward mental health care provision, but also provide you with extensive leadership skills and qualifications for the future.

Do you think you have what it takes? For further information and to apply visit the Think Ahead website. But be quick the deadline for applications is 30 April.
