Our modern matrons make sure our patients receive the highest standard of care by providing visible and accessible leadership to ward staff.
Modern matrons make sure that patients are treated with respect and resolve problems for patients and their relatives. They make sure ward staffing is appropriate to the needs of patients and oversee ward spending.
Modern matrons have an overview of what is happening within their department and can spend time reading through reports, answering emails and attending meetings. They also conduct supervisions and appraisals and may have their own caseload of patients.
Taking an active part in patient environment audits including infection, prevention and control, also fall under the remit of the modern matron and involvement with key Trust initiatives can take up a substantial part of their time.
A modern matron at the Trust said the best thing about their role is that “No day is ever the same; there is a lot of variety. I have patient contact and I still feel like I’m part of a team even though I’m not actually based on a ward. It is an interesting job with plenty of challenges”.
