Merlin ward is part of Ridgeway, our secure services inpatient accommodation at Roseberry Park, Middlesbrough

Merlin is a 10 bedded, medium secure ward which provides specialised assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and after-care services for offenders with mental health problems or those at risk of offending.

About the service

The philosophy of care for Merlin ward is that each patient is an individual who has the right to receive professional care in an environment which minimises the risk to the patient of harm from themselves and from others.

Patients will be supported in the lowest level of security for the shortest period of time, before returning to live in the community when appropriate.

The focus on the ward is to provide interventions to reduce the distress and functional impairment associated with the mental disorder of the individual and to promote recovery.  This could include living with psychosis work, hearing voices groups, interpersonal skills, social skills, motivational therapy, vocational work and physical activities. 

About the ward

Merlin ward has a lounge, dining room, quiet room, activity room, activities of daily living kitchen, two staff offices, ten bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, a shared bathroom and a courtyard.

Merlin ward has set meal times which are protected. These are:

Breakfast 8am-9am

Lunch 12pm-1pm

Evening meal 5pm-6pm

Visiting times on Merlin ward are:

Monday-Friday 6pm-7pm

Sat-Sun 10am-12noon, 1pm-5pm and 6pm-7pm

Referrals

A referral will be made from the criminal justice or adult mental health services to one of Ridgeway’s consultants. They will then allocate a forensic mental health team to carry out an assessment.

A report will be compiled and a decision will be made as to whether the referred person is suitable for forensic services. If they are, an admission date will be agreed.
