About Brambling Ward

Brambling ward is a 13 bedded, female, low secure, forensic mental health assessment and rehabilitation ward.

It is located in Ridgeway at Roseberry Park.

The average admission length is between 18 to 36 months and is based on the recovery model.

Treatments and therapies

There are various therapies that can be offered by psychology or nursing staff dependent upon individual need, including work on substance misuse, arson or talking therapies.

The ward team

During a stay on the ward, patients will be cared for by a multi disciplinary team.

The team is made up of qualified nurses, consultant psychiatrists, junior doctors, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists and nursing assistants.

Multi disciplinary team meetings usually occur every week. Multi disciplinary team meetings will allow the patient the opportunity to discuss their care with the people involved.

How to access the service

Referrals to the service are received from Prisons, high secure hospitals, the private sector and other NHS inpatient facilities.

Once a referral is received, it is allocated to a team and an assessment will be carried out as to whether the service would be beneficial to the individual.

Activities on the ward

Brambling ward follows a timetable and has a 7 day activity programme.

Patients should attend the motivational meeting held daily so staff can let them know of any important information.

At this meeting patients can also request ground leave for the following day and book the kitchen for cooking.

Meal times

Meals are provided on the ward. There are three meals per day, always with a variety of choice. The weekly menus are on display in the dining room and alternate each week.

Meal times are protected time.

If patients have any special dietary requirements (such as diabetic or vegetarian) the team will inform the catering service.

If patients do not wish to eat the meals provided, there are facilities on the ward for patients to prepare their own meals. This must be done under staff supervision and following a risk assessment.

Smoking

This is a no smoking site. Patients, visitors, staff and contractors are not permitted to smoke at any time in the buildings or grounds.

Visiting times

Visiting times can be flexible if visitors have a long way to travel or have difficulty fitting around visiting times. You can ask the ward manager, or deputy, to book visits outside of normal visiting times.

Any items brought by family or friends during a visit will be checked by a member of staff. Any prohibited items will be removed. If food or drink items, or cigarettes, are brought for patients they will only be accepted if they are fully sealed.

Ward visiting times are:

  • Weekdays 6.00pm - 7.00pm
  • Weekends: 2.00pm - 4.00pm and 6.00pm - 7.00pm

All visits must be booked in with the ward at least 24 hours in advance. Visitors should contact the ward prior to setting off to ensure the visit can be facilitated.

Child visiting

Visitors under the age of 18 will not be allowed access to Brambling ward. Visits will take place in the child visiting room, in Ridgeway.

Patients who require a child visit must inform a member of staff at the earliest opportunity to enable this to be arranged. Child visits must be booked plenty of time in advance to make sure the visiting room is available.

All children visiting must be a relation to the patient.

Child visits will be supervised by at least one member of staff.
