About the service

Bedale is a psychiatric intensive care unit at Roseberry Park in Middlesbrough catering for males and females aged between 18 to 65 suffering with a mental illness.

The aim of admission to a psychiatric intensive care unit is to carry out an assessment and establish treatment in an environment that has a stronger focus on safety and structure. This means that there are less beds and a higher staff/patient ratio, with a robust multi disciplinary team providing a holistic approach to patients whose complex needs could not be met on the acute admission ward.

The team

The Bedale team includes:

  • Consultant psychiatrist
  • Junior doctor
  • Psychologist
  • Occupational therapy staff
  • Ward manager
  • Staff nurses
  • Physical health nurse
  • Health care assistant
  • Community team inreach.

How to access the service

Some patients, when unwell, can present with challenging behaviour or have complex needs that are better met in the structured environment of a psychiatric intensive care unit. If this is the case any admitting ward can refer to a psychiatric intensive care unit for an assessment.
