Member Recruitment Event
The trust attended Redcar and Cleveland College on 11 September 2013 encouraging staff and students to sign up and support their local NHS mental health and learning disability trust by becoming a foundation trust public member. Over 100 people signed up on the day which is fantastic.
Vanessa Wildon, public governor for Redcar and Cleveland, helped out on the stand and spoke to a lot of new members about raising awareness and stopping discrimination. Afterwards she made the following comments:
"What great fun. I expect that's the last thing you would expect a new governor to say after their first public event. At the start I had some feelings of trepidation as having no idea of what to expect caused some nervousness. Finding that I rather relished persuading students at the fresher fair to become a member of the trust. Though I admit that the stress balls (we gave away) acted as an initial lure to the stall. My enthusiasm knew no bounds once I signed up four students. Explaining what we do as a trust and what membership means.
To get the agreement to become a member I realised you had to have verbal skills that matched Mo Farah on the track; in speed and enthusiasm. We managed to gain a sizeable number of people to become members. In all honesty I enjoyed the event immensely and would say to any governor get involved in local events to do with the trust. You will meet a diversity of people with many stories and questions, you can help people learn what mental illness and learning disabilities are; not just the skewed view that they know from the press. Helping ultimately to address stigma and barriers in society that exist for people with mental illness and learning disabilities."
