About the service

The mental health team is committed to delivering high quality care to mentally disordered offenders. The model of service delivery aims to provide timely and accessible mental health assessment and treatment to meet the needs of prisoners.

The service is provided to prisoners housed at HMP Kirklevington Grange.

A range of treatment and therapies may be offered, including:

  • Day services
  • Stepped care approach involving three tiers
  • Robust triage process
  • Comprehensive assessment.

The HMP Kirklevington Grange mental health team

The team includes a mental health team manager, clinical lead, mental health nurse, advanced practitioners, support workers, technical instructor and team secretaries.

How to access the service

Referrals can be made by any staff working within HMP Kirklevington Grange.

Referrals are also accepted from outside sources such as mental health services, probation, solicitors, police and family members.

What can people expect?

An initial assessment is completed within 2 working days of receiving the referral.

Once completed, the assessment is discussed within the multi-disciplinary team.

If the patient is to placed under the care of the mental health team they will be allocated a key worker and appropriate treatment will begin. This could be medication, one to one work, group work or supported self help.

If needed the patient could also be given an appointment with a visiting forensic consultant psychiatrist.

If, after initial assessment, the patient is inappropriate for mental health services they would be signposted to a more appropriate service or discharged from the team.
