About the service
The County Durham and Darlington children and young people's eating disorder team is a service that provides assessment and treatment of children and young people who are already undergoing assessment within tier three child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) for an eating disorder such as anorexia, bulimia or EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified).
The service is countywide but based at the Mulberry Centre along with Darlington CAMHS.
The service also:
- Provides support and consultation for family members, carers, tier three CAMHS and other services that are involved with a referred child
- Works very closely with other services such as CAMHS, GPs and paediatricians to monitor physical health.
The team offer a range of treatments and therapies including solution focussed therapy, cognitive behavioural work, family work, motivational enhancement therapy, a collaborative skills group for parents and meal support.
The eating disorders team includes psychiatrists, a psychologist, a nurse, an associate practitioner and a secretary.
How to access the service
Referrals are accepted by the service from tier three CAMHS within County Durham and Darlington and paediatricians.
When a referral is received, an appointment to meet with the team will be sent out and in some circumstances a member of the team may telephone prior to an appointment being made.
The team aims to see the patient as soon as possible, however the wait should be no more than four weeks for an initial appointment.
