About the service

The primary care mental health service provides brief interventions (of up to six sessions) for adults aged 18 and over who are experiencing mild to moderate mental health problems. The service comprises of link workers and counsellors.

You may be referred to see a linkworker for various reasons, including:

  • Low mood affecting activities of daily living
  • Eating disorders where secondary care services are not deemed appropriate (brief intervention only)
  • Signposting to appropriate agencies, where it is not initially clear
  • Post-natal depression.

You may be referred to see a counsellor for:

  • Low mood affecting activities of daily living with complex bereavement/life event issues
  • Low mood and self-esteem issues
  • Low mood caused by relationship issues
  • Adjustment reactions to: physical illness affecting mental health; or significant severe psychological trauma which affects level of functioning.

Treatment and therapies available

The service may offer a range of treatment and therapies including:

  • Counselling
  • Problem solving/solution focussed techniques
  • Helping to identify coping strategies
  • Health promotion
  • Signposting to other appropriate services.

The team

The primary care mental health service comprises of linkworkers (who have a professional background in nursing, occupational therapy or social work) and counsellors (qualified practitioners, who are members of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy).

How to access the service

Referrals to the service are accepted from GPs, primary health care team members, the psychiatry team, community mental health teams or psychology.

The services aims to offer an appointment with a member of its assessment team within 4 weeks of referral. The assessment team operate from The Briary Wing (Harrogate); Mowbray Square Medical Centre (Harrogate) and Valley Gardens Resource Centre (Harrogate). All patients are asked to attend one of these three bases for their initial appointment, which usually takes around 50 minutes.

Following on from assessment, if appropriate, patients will then be offered an appointment to see either a counsellor or a linkworker for treatment in local GP practices, The Briary Wing (Harrogate) or Valley Gardens Resource Centre (Harrogate).
