About the service

The service provides specialist assessment and intervention for deaf, deafened or deaf-blind people with mental health problems.

Assessment and treatment can be offered in British Sign Language, interpreter service can be arranged as required.

The service area includes Northumberland, North Tyneside, Newcastle, Gateshead, South Tyneside, Sunderland, County Durham, Darlington and Teesside.

People must be at least 18 years of age or older to receive a service. There is no upper age limit.

The service is predominately but not exclusively for those who use sign language.

The service also provides signposting and specialist advice.

How can the service help?

The service offers:

  • Deaf aware staff
  • Deaf friendly mental health information
  • Some interventions provided on a one to one basis using British Sign Language
  • Service user groups using British Sign Language.

The team

The mental health and deafness team includes:

  • Consultant psychiatrist (qualified level 2 British Sign Language)
  • Clinical nurse specialists (qualified level 3 British Sign Language)
  • Secretary.

How to access the service

Referrals to the service are normally made via the GP or any care coordinator or lead professional.

The first appointment made with mental health services are usually offered as a joint appointment with the access team.

All accepted referrals will be worked in partnership with local secondary services. In addition the team may work in conjunction with any of the other specialist services within Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust or Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust and other appropriate agencies.
