What is Harrogate and Ripon community mental health service?

We are a group of mental health professionals (doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists, social workers and support workers).  We work together to provide a specialist mental health service for people in the Harrogate, Wetherby and Ripon area.

Most people with mental health problems get help through their general practitioner (family doctor), but sometimes extra help is needed, and this is when you might get asked to meet us.

What will happen at my first appointment?

One or two professionals from our team will talk with you, to assess your problems and the type of help you might need.  We will ask questions about you, your health, life and problems.

You will also be able to ask us any questions you have.

The appointment is likely to last between 30 minutes and one hour.

At the end of the assessment, we will give you advice about what sort of help we can provide, and we will talk about what will happen next.

I find it difficult to talk about my problems.

Lots of people feel like this.  We know it can be hard to talk about your life and problems, but knowing about you will help us work out how best to help you.

Can I bring someone with me?

Some people want to bring a family member or friend with them.  Do bring someone if you wish.  You may want them to stay for some or all of the appointment but usually we ask to see you alone for some of the assessment.

What information should I bring to the assessment?

Some people write down what they want to say or ask and bring this with them.

How to get here

If we have asked you to come to one of our buildings, we will send you a leaflet with a map, public transport and parking information.

I may need extra help at my appointment

If you need an interpreter, wider access or a hearing loop, please tell us.  You can telephone us on 01423 852000, or write to us at Harrogate and Ripon Community Mental Health Service, Valley Gardens Resource Centre, Floor 2 Windsor House, Cornwall Road, Harrogate, HG1 2PW.

About the service

The Harrogate and Wetherby community mental health team provide community mental health services for people aged 18 to 65 years, who are registered with a local general practitioner (GP) and who have a severe or enduring mental illness, which cannot be managed in primary care.  The service also offers support to individual family members or carers.

The aim of the service is to:

  • Offer treatment and advice
  • Enable people to function as independently as they are able to in their own home
  • Make the best possible recovery within the limitations of their illness.

The care coordinator/lead professional will work with individuals to help them access treatment and offer support, to enable individuals to optimise their recovery. This may involve seeing more than one member of the team.
